What do you do when you realize that the lifestyle you worked so hard to build destroys your health, your marriage and your life?
Give it all up and walk away….At least, that’s what we did!
In 2015, I had to leave my career because my health was failing me yet again. I’d survived 3 spinal surgeries in my early 20’s, but years of heavy prescription drugs had finally caught up to me. I could not continue in my career and ran into the harsh reality that this life just wasn’t working.
Flashback to one year prior. Aaron and I were both working up to 10 hours a day, and I worked an additional 10 hours on the weekends. We spent our personal time sleeping, catching up on errands and housework, or zoning out in front of the TV. By all accounts however, we had the “American Dream”.
Until I got sick. Then it all fell apart. You don’t realize the fragile reality you live in until one crack in the structure brings the entire thing down. Suddenly I was unemployed and we were spending thousands on my healthcare. It wasn’t fair. How could this happen? Why us?
The truth is, it’s not just us. It’s millions of Americans. People living their lives according to what we “think” we want and need. People compromising their health to “get ahead” in their careers. People neglecting their children and marriages to make the monthly debt payments.
After my health improved, we had a choice to make. Continue down the same path that led us here, or start the daunting task of building a new one. Not one to back down from a challenge, we chose the latter and haven’t looked back since!
